The Soil Health card project was initially a state level project jointly sponsored by the Department of Education & Department of Agriculture, Government of Gujarat, with the aim to provide a complete soil health card to all the farmers of Gujarat as a golden goal. The aim to involve the Government Science colleges under this soil analysis projects was an initiative of Hon’ble Narendra Modiji, then Chief Minister of Gujarat, with the motto of “Earn While Learn” for students. The students benefited financially as part of the project funding is directly distributed amongst them based on the number of samples analyzed by them.
To achieve this, selected Government colleges of Gujarat were provided with good laboratory facilities. This work is done under supervision of teachers, by the students. Thus “EARN WHILE LEARN” is also established for the students. Moreover, the soil health card project is an awareness project for farmers. This project has been running successfully in our college since 2009 at the Department of Chemistry. As per the allotted samples, 20 to 45 students are selected and allowed to work in the time other than their regular class.
The soil health card provides necessary information to the farmers about the crop, quantity of fertilizers required and other necessary information. This also gives rise to socio-economic development of the farmers and the villages are sustained. Moreover, our college is one of the selected colleges in Gujarat state which holds micronutrients and secondary element analysis facilities. Thus analysis includes measurements like pH, EC, Organic Carbon, Nitrogen, Potash, Phosphorous, Sulfur, Boron, Copper, Iron, Manganese, Zinc. Laboratory is equipped with various analytical instruments like Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Flame photometer, Colorimeters, pH meters, Conductometer along with mechanical stirrers and Hot Plates.
Till 2022, 250+ students participated in these projects with 1.9+ Lacs soil health card generations and total cost of 111+ Lacs of funding.
